John Fields is in his 27th season leading The University of Texas Men’s Golf Program. Since becoming head coach in August 1997, Fields has guided Texas to 21 NCAA Championship appearances, including NCAA team titles in 2012 and 2022. Under his leadership, the Longhorns have reached the NCAA quarterfinals seven times in the last 11 years and hold the nation’s longest streak of consecutive NCAA Championship appearances at 16.

Fields has been named Golfweek’s Men’s National Coach of the Year three times (2012, 2016, 2022) and Big 12 Coach of the Year nine times. Texas has won nine Big 12 team championships during his tenure, and seven UT players have claimed individual Big 12 titles. Fields has coached 27 All-Americans, including notable names like Jordan Spieth and Scottie Scheffler.

In addition to his coaching accolades, Fields spearheaded the idea of establishing a permanent natural site for the Division I NCAA Golf Championships, enhancing the tournament's consistency and prestige. Prior to Texas, he coached at the University of New Mexico, leading them to nine NCAA Championship appearances in ten years. A former four-year letterman at New Mexico, Fields has been instrumental in fostering both team and individual successes in collegiate golf.

Fields resides in Austin, Texas with his wife, Pearl. They have two adult children, Marshall and April, and a grandchild, Gentry Pearl.
